Be concerned with safety, it pays off!
The contest Let's all be safe with your cows on the farm, conducted in collaboration with the Conseil provincial des CAB, was tremendously successful this spring with a large number of producers participating in the two parts of the contest to get a chance to win a gift certificat applicable to CIAQ's products and services.
Part 1 - "The good ideas"

The winners selected for this part of the contest told us how they had improved safety on their farm concerning the handling of animals. They are :

1st prize Ferme P.S. Collin inc. in Saint-Esprit who earned a 400 $
gift certificate.
Serge Collin thought of a simple and economical solution to flush the level of the central alley with the stalls to make the A.I. technician's work easier (photo 1). Made from a plywood board, this removable platform can be easily built by any hobbyist handyman.
2nd prize Ferme des Hautes Terres in Saint-Rémi–de-Tingwick, owned by
Mathieu Martel and Valérie Houle, who received a 200 $ gift
certificate.
"For our beef cattle, we produced a very versatile care and handling cage with a really simple design . The back gate closes on the animal and he is restrained, thanks to a self-blocking head fastener" explains Valérie Houle.
We also received other good ideas such as :
- use a cable with a safety hook to isolate the animal from the rest of the group,
- make a funnel with a removable gate,
- add a man pass in the pens that don't have one to avoid having to straddle the gates,
-

use the isolation area for cows to be inseminated,

-

spread abrasives on humid floors,

-

make sure that the owner or an employee are present at the time of manipulations,

- give proper training to employees and
- eliminate dangerous animals.

Several participants wrote us : "Before, I used to tie only the cows to be inseminated in my free-stall pens. Now, I tie them all. This makes it much easier for technicians to identify the animals and makes their work much safer".

Part 2 - "Spot the mistake"

All participants in the contest had to identify the mistake related to safety in the pictures presented. The winner is Ferme JIEF in Saint-Jacques who earns a 200 $ gift certificate.

Our thanks to all the breeders who participated in the contest and we hope that by sharing with you the good ideas of our winners, we will have allowed you to take advantage of them on your farm. Your safety and that of our employees is important to us!

Guy Lavoie pursues his term as CIAQ chairman

Guy Lavoie
Saint-Hyacinthe, 29 April 2008 – The Board of Directors of the Centre d'insémination artificielle du Québec held a meeting on 29 April 2008, on the same day when CIAQ presented its report for the year 2007, to elect the members of their executive committee. Mr Guy Lavoie was reappointed as CIAQ's Chairman for a second year. He will be assisted by Gary Bowers as 1st Vice-chairman and Normand Barriault as 2nd Vice-chairman.

A delegate from the Conseil provincial des CAB (CP CAB) and a member of the Board of Directors of The Semex Alliance, Mr Lavoie has been sitting on the CIAQ Board of Directors of CIAQ since 2002 and of the CP CAB since 1997. Guy Lavoie operates a dairy farm in Saint-Bonaventure with his spouse, Violette Denoncourt, and their son Alexandre. The herd includes 45 Holstein and Jersey cows bearing the Bona prefix and, in 2007, one of the cows was awarded the « Étoile du PEP » recognition in the Jersey breed and the CIAQ trophy for her exceptional performance.

Chairman Lavoie thanked all his colleagues on the Board of Directors for their confidence, but mainly for their collaboration and their great availability in 2007. "It is with the same team that I will get down to work so that the strategic plan recently developed for the next three years may give results that are as satisfactory as those of the year that is ending" concluded Mr Lavoie.

  Satisfactory year 2007 for CIAQ
and generous bonuses for producers
Saint-Hyacinthe, 29 April 2008 – Guy Lavoie, a dairy producer in Saint-Bonaventure, just completed his first year as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Centre d'insémination artificielle du Québec (CIAQ) and he declared being "Proud of the work accomplished for the benefit of the breeder-owners". In financial terms, CIAQ is showing sales figures of over 39 million dollars and a net profit of 1 276 000 $, an increase of 398 000 $ over last year since the semen sales in Québec have risen by 3,3 % and the operating expenses have been relatively stable.
General Manager Normand Renaud presents a gift to Marc-André Chaput of Varennes and Geneviève Gonthier of Saint-Charles-de-Bellechasse, in recognition for their testimonies during the presentation of CIAQ's annual report.
René Saint-Jean, Director of Marketing and Services, serves champagne to the guests to celebrate CIAQ's 60th anniversary.
The CIAQ operating income went up to 2 858 000 $, an increase of 174 000 $ with regards to the previous year. In fact, CIAQ's financial results are superior to those of 2006, as much for the semen sales and the operating income as for the share in the net profit of The Semex Alliance. Therefore, CIAQ was able again this year to pay loyalty bonuses of 2 211 000 $ to its clients while maintaining its support to the various partner organizations.

Producers can thus be very proud of their A.I. centre, CIAQ, when they recognize that these loyalty bonuses, paired with the various incentives related to the testing program and the sums paid to the partner organizations, amount to 8,7 million $ or 42 ¢ per sales dollar. As for the international sales made by The Semex Alliance, they have contributed for 19 ¢ per sales dollar.

As far as activities are concerned, CIAQ celebrated the 40th anniversary of the young sire testing program (PEP) and, as mentioned by Normand Renaud, General Manager, "The breeders joined the celebrations since we broke some records, both for the number of young sire semen doses used in one year and the number of classified young sire daughters". This program allows for the identification of the top proven sires and in that matter, CIAQ is very satisfied with its offer that has maintained the high standards to which the producers have been accustomed. In order to benefit from their full potential, the organization offered a full range of consulting services in genetics. The latest in line is the Tandem Service which allows the advisor to accompany the breeder and to team up for the genetic development of the herd.

"These services, paired with our tools such as ProGen (sire recommendation program) that we can adjust to the breeding objectives of each producer, or our proof sheets adapted to the various interests of our clientele, are as many assets aimed at making the producers' tasks easier and at helping them reach better profitability with their farms" added Normand Renaud. "In this year 2008 that marks CIAQ's 60th anniversary, we can be proud of our past and face the future with optimism with our new slogan Évolution. Passion. Vision, for the benefit of our breeder-owners."

  2008 International Dairy Showcase

The Comité promotionnel des races laitières is proud to announce the fifth edition of the International Diary Showcase that will take place on April 16, 17 and 18, 2008 on the St-Hyacinthe fairground. The members of the Organizing Committee are enthusiastic about this fifth edition and are inviting breeders, partners and all those involved in the dairy and genetic industries to take part in this event.

The International Dairy Showcase is a unique event in this province, spotlighting the genetics of Quebec’s top farms. This event will include a multi-breed programme of activities that will give you the opportunity to assess the value of more than 400 high-quality animals. Four elite sales are planned for April 17 where high-calibre Ayrshire, Jersey, Brown Swiss and Canadienne animals will be put up for sale. On April 18, three judgings involving over 300 animals from the 3 major breeds will be presented and there will be a display of Canadienne animals.

In addition to these two key events, the International Dairy Showcase will also highlight a youth programme and a Semex display of young sire daughters. The L’International Banquet will also attract a multitude of visitors and give you an opportunity to discover Quebec’s cheeses - an occasion you don’t want to miss!

Ayrshire Quebec is proud to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the International Ayrshire Spring Show during the 2008 IDS. The Ayrshire Breeders Association of Canada invites you its Annual General meeting that will be held on Wednesday, April 16th.

Again this year, CIAQ/Semex Alliance will hold a cow exhibit, featuring daughters of Blackstone (JE), Ristourn (AY), Poker (AY), Normandin (AY) and David (BS).

Join us and look for CIAQ/Semex Alliance daughters display.
