Stouder Morty Is Now A Millionaire Sire!
0200HO00044 Stouder Morty EX recently surpassed the one million-dose mark, joining the elite ranks of Millionaire Sire Status at the Semex Alliance. This well-known and popular sire resides at Eastern Breeders Inc (EBI), in Kemptville, Ontario, and has been in high demand around the world producing over 1,000,000 doses to date.

Born on May 25, 1995 at Stouder Holsteins in Wendell, Idaho, USA, Morty joined Semex's USA proving program, Premier. In February 2002 he made his debut on the TPI charts at #6 and maintained his top rankings, rising to #1 TPI in February 2003.

Morty's daughters have been known as high producers with terrific udders and feet & legs for structurally correct, long-lasting cows. In Canada alone Morty has 15,678 daughters classified with nearly 60% GP or better, and 16,689 daughters average ME of 11,864 3.6 % 423 3.1 % 366 kg.

"Morty sires cows that dairymen everywhere can appreciate," says Pierre Laliberte, Senior Vice-President, Global Genetic Programs/Operations. "His daughters work hard in every environment, making him one of our most popular sires available today. With over 100 Morty sons at The Semex Alliance yet to receive their first proof, we will feel Morty's influence for generations to come."

Ron Stewart, EBI's Manager of Farm Operations states, "Morty, at 10 years of age, is still healthy. He's an athletic, agile bull that has always been an aggressive eater, yet good to work with."

"Morty holds the EBI record for most doses made in one day (August 28, 2007 - 4,146 doses). It is rare to see a bull that has been able to meet the demands that he has and exceed them for as long as he has," observes Jason Cratchley, EBI Laboratory Supervisor. "Morty has been our most consistently shipped bull over the past few years, while demand for him over the past few months is as high as it's been at anytime," states Chris Peters, EBI Distribution Supervisor.

Launching of the new Synergie program

Saint-Hyacinthe, 12 October 2007 – The industry partners were proud to launch the new Synergie program, under the theme Innovate to Progress, in connection with the Dairy Cattle Improvement Industry Forum held on 11 September. At the instance of Valacta, the objective of this innovative program backed by the industry partners is to increase the number of herds where animals are eligible to genetic evaluations by first offering classification and several financial benefits on genetic improvement tools.

Partners in the Synergie program

From left to right : Jean-Albert Fleury, Vice-President, Holstein Québec; Normand Renaud, General Manager, CIAQ; Caroline Pelletier, Coordinator of the Synergie program, CIAQ; Brad Sayles, Marketing Director, Holstein Canada; Rodrigue Martin, Dairy Production Advisor, MAPAQ; Léonard Chabot, President, Club Brown Swiss du Québec; John Iversen, President, Holstein Canada; Marcellin Therrien, President, Ayrshire Canada; Mathieu Désy, General Manager, Ayrshire Québec; Sylvain Biron, Regional Director North Shore, Valacta; Serge Blanchette, Chairman of the Genetics Committee, Valacta; Maureen Bowers, Director, Jersey Canada; Isabelle Roy, President, Jersey Québec; James Peel, General Manager, Holstein Québec, and Marcel Choinière, President, CQRL.

In the same vein as the previous programs aimed at promoting animal registration, Synergie is a complete program mainly intended for producers who do not use milk recording, registration or type classification. Synergie is also designed for various profiled breeders who are already using one or several genetic improvement tools.

Synergie is inspired by the Amélior'Action Program whose success lies on the visible benefits from classification available to producers in the management of their herds. This innovative program incites them to have their animals registered and to be part of the genetic improvement scheme.

One resource person assigned to the coordination of the program (Caroline Pelletier, CIAQ) as well as a full-time person (Mario Cantin, Holstein Canada) and the contribution of the provincial breed association advisors for solicitation will ensure the success of the Synergie program.

The partners in the project are : Centre d'insémination artificielle du Québec (CIAQ), ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ), Valacta, Conseil québécois des races laitières (CQRL), Holstein Canada, Holstein Québec, Ayrshire Canada, Ayrshire Québec, Jersey Canada, Jersey Québec, Canadian Braunvieh & Brown Swiss Association and Club Brown Swiss du Québec.

Mathieu Désy joins the CIAQ team
Mathieu Désy
CIAQ is pleased to announce the nomination of Mathieu Désy as Coloured breed specialist and Genetics advisor, position that he occupies since mid-October 2007.

Mathieu will promote the benefits of the complete line of products and services of CIAQ while maintaining permanent links with the staff of the coloured breed associations. He will also join the team of CIAQ advisors who offer consulting services and elaborate genetic improvement strategies for CIAQ clients.

Born and raised on a dairy farm in the Lanaudière area, Mathieu arrives at CIAQ with an impressive background and an important expertise in the dairy industry. He is well known, having occupied the position of advisor and general manager of the Société Ayrshire du Québec during seven years where he has touched many aspects of the promotion, marketing, genetics and even management linked to the activities of a breed association.

The position of Mathieu was partly occupied since 2006 by Patrice Simard who is now part of The Semex Alliance team and whose responsibilities are the ones of young Jersey sires selection and technical support for coloured breeds on the international level.

We are convinced that Mathieu Désy, who has a formation in agricultural technology, will know to put his knowledge of all dairy breeds, his ability and his dynamism to the benefit of CIAQ clients.
