Bid Farewell To Oliveholme Aeroline

039HO00453 Oliveholme Aeroline EX EXTRA
June 9, 1991 – November 24, 2005

Oliveholme Aeroline

Oliveholme Aeroline was known not only as a sire of sons, but also as a member of the coveted "Millionaire Sires" as he produced 1,171,870 doses of semen in his lifetime, making his millionth dose on June 28, 2002.

Sired by Madawaska Aerostar EX EXTRA GM, Aeroline was also a graduate of BCAI Centre's (now Westgen) young sire proving program. Aeroline followed his father's footsteps in more ways than one, being proven in the same area as well as housed and collected in the same facility.

First proven in July 1996, Aeroline emerged as the #2 sire in the nation to another popular Aerostar son, Startmore Rudolph. Aeroline continued as a mainstay in the high ranking LPI charts as he became known as a consistent sire, with a breeding pattern that satisfied breeders with their wide bodies, deep chests, hard tops, wide rumps and soft udders that milked out quickly and lasted for many lactations.

Like his famous father, Aeroline pleased breeders around the world, selling over 20,000 doses to the USA, Mexico, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

"Without siring the daughter that became a household name around North America, Aeroline sired many profitable, trouble-free cattle, that calved easily, regularly, produced at a high level with low somatic cell counts, and stayed around in their herds for many lactations," says Harley Nicholson Westgen General Manager. "He was more adept at siring good cows for freestalls and tiestalls than for showrings. He continues to add to his list of Excellent scored daughters in Canada, with 4 of his mature daughters having moved up to that level in November 2005."

To date Aeroline has 30,120 daughters classified in Canada with 58% scoring GP or better including 134 EX, 3,261 VG and 13,965 GP with impressive production numbers. His 34,534 daughters in Canada ME average 10,925M 3.6 398F 3.1 342P kgs.

Shoremar James and Comestar Leader :
portrait of two prominent sires in the breed

This fall, two very popular sires passed away. Hereafter is a portrait of their careers.

73 HO 2400 Shoremar James, GP-Extra
May 30, 1993 – November 22, 2005

Shoremar James
A bull with the ability to sire both show winners and great sons, Shoremar James will be remembered as a great sire for generations to come.

"James sired stylish cows with lovely udders," says Thierry Laberge, Semex Alliance Sire Analyst. "They seem to improve lactation after lactation. When used right, he can give the special kind."'

With 103 Excellents and 2,140 VG daughters and at 63% GP on 15,879 daughters, James is certainly a sire of the "special ones." Not only do they look good, but they work hard at an ME of 10,639M 403F 346P on 17,735 daughters.

James is the sire of numerous special cows including the 2003 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion Despointes James Sydney EX-CAN with 3-05 305 13,147 3.2 425 3.0 398 kgs. Other impressive daughters include Gillette James Cabrelle VG-89-3YR-CAN who topped the 2005 Sale of Stars at $180,000; Blondin James Supra VG-89-3YR-CAN, the Grand Champion of the Eastern Championship Show in 2003 and Travesia James Elsa a cow with numerous European show winnings.

James was also the sire of some of the hottest bulls going. His most famous son to date is the highly demanded 0200HO03205 Braedale Goldwyn, #1 in Canada for Conformation at +19 and still impressive in all other areas at #12 LPI in October 2005.

Internationally, James was certainly a popular sire with over 620,000 doses sold to numerous countries including Australia, Germany, Spain, France, UK, Italy and the USA. Each of which imported over 21,000 doses.

Time will only tell the influence James will have on our industry, but with sons like Goldwyn, we know that the James story is far from over.

71 HO 1181 Comestar Leader, EX-Extra
November 1, 1990 – October 24, 2005

Comestar Leader
Internationally respected, Comestar Leader was considered a true dairyman's bull. He left the mark of dairyness from head to tail on his daughters, siring high milk producers, show winners and highly classified progeny, leaving breeders satisfied around the world.'

"This bull produced tremendous dairy strength with great udder texture and bone quality," said Lowell Lindsay, Semex Sire Analyst.  "A Blackstar x Sheik x Mark Anthony, he was similar to his three full sisters for width of chest, great feet & legs and like his sisters, he passed it along to his daughters."'

Leader's impact on the industry will be felt for generations to come as he had over 20,000 daughters classified in Canada alone. Certainly an impressive statistic on its own, but couple that with the fact that 66 % of these daughters are classified GP or better, (254 EX and 3403 VG) and it is easy to see why Leader will remain a favorite wherever dairy cows are appreciated worldwide.'

His daughters have included those so widely recognized they are easily recognized by one name only…. Melanie, Jessica Charity and Ezra among others.

- Hillcroft Leader Melanie EX-96-2E-USA, World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion 2004 & 2004 World Champion
- Elmar Leader Jessica EX-3E-USA, International Dairy Week Champion 2003, Australia
- Wiesenfeld Leader Charity EX-94-NLD, NRM Grand Champion 2004
- Raverley Leader Ezra EX-CAN., All-Canadian Mature Cow 2003

Comestar Leader's popularity was certainly unprecedented throughout his career, as his semen was sold into 43 countries and he enjoyed the coveted "Millionaire Sire" status with lifetime production of over 1.4 million doses.'

"Leader was a bull whose popularity did not fade. Through nine months of 2005 he was Semex's 9th highest selling bull with 97,227 doses sold thus far," says Dr. Jacques Messier, Semex Alliance General Manager. "These sales statistics are particularly impressive considering Leader would have turned 15 on November 1."

Like his daughters, Leader himself demonstrated tremendous longevity and profitability, being successfully collected for the final time just last week.'

Comestar Holstein's Marc Comtois agrees, "Leader's daughters are long-lasting, profitable cows. Traveling the world it was easy to see why dairymen loved Leader. He has bred national show champions and he also worked for breeders in commercial settings, making him a truly great bull."'

"It has been an honour to breed a bull that has had such great success for breeders and producers worldwide," Comtois adds.

CIAQ pays another "semen loyalty bonus"

Saint-Hyacinthe, 3 November 2005 - “ The CIAQ Board members, management and staff are happy to announce the payment of a semen loyalty bonus to producers for a sixth consecutive year. The bonus will correspond to 10 % of the semen purchased* from CIAQ by its clients during the year 2005. This is a 3 % increase over the previous bonus.

CIAQ is conscious of the constant challenges met by its clients and, with this bonus, wishes to acknowledge the producers' loyalty to CIAQ and support them in this most changing environment within the dairy and beef industry. The financial situation of the organization enhanced by the successful sales on the international level will therefore allow for the payment of the semen loyalty bonus at the beginning of 2006. Let us recall that over the last five years, CIAQ has returned to its loyal clients a cumulative amount of 5,8 million $. The semen loyalty bonus is paid in addition to other bonuses already offered by CIAQ.

Québec dairy and beef producers can rely on CIAQ, established for more than 55 years and constantly in touch with their needs.

CIAQ is owned by the Fédération des producteurs de lait du Québec (milk producers), the Conseil provincial des CAB inc. (breeding clubs) and the Conseil québécois des races laitières inc. (breed associations). Firmly committed to the development of dairy and beef production, CIAQ produces and markets semen of high genetic and sanitary quality and offers services that meet the needs of its markets.

ProGen...
a state-of-the-art sire recommendation program!
Saint-Hyacinthe, 25 October 2005 - The Centre d’insémination artificielle du Québec (CIAQ) has just launched its new sire recommendation program ProGen. CIAQ joined its partners, the Canadian A.I. units EBI and Gencor, in developing the most state-of-the-art program ever. The great expertise of the designers and their collaborators will allow producers from Québec and other provinces to take advantage of a tool that will optimize the genetic progress of their herds. ProGen was designed by experts, for experts, and will be delivered to dairy producers following the publication of the November 2005 genetic evaluations.

ProGen will meet the needs of producers who have different breeding philosophies since it will be possible and easy for CIAQ’s advisers to personalize the recommendations according to each herd’s strategy and to offer state-of-the-art solutions

One of ProGen’s important and unique elements is the use of an inbreeding matrix developed jointly with the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN). This novel approach considers the exact levels of inbreeding based on all the pedigree information. With ProGen, each breeder will be able to choose the optimum level for his herd. It is a known fact that high inbreeding can lead to a decrease in animal performance and that the impact is particularly important on health and fertility traits.

Brian Van Doormaal, CDN’s General Manager, mentioned : “Given the accumulation of inbreeding in all dairy breeds during the past 15 years, it is no longer acceptable to consider only three or even four generations to evaluate the inbreeding level of a potential mating. This matrix, the first of its kind in the world, will give producers full confidence in controlling the inbreeding level associated with each mating and the whole herd. There is no doubt that all mating programs in the future will need to balance genetic progress and inbreeding in a manner that ProGen can do today”.

This program, with its state-of-the art features, will have an impact on the overall Québec dairy industry. As stated by Alan Bryson, Head of Genetic Expertise at CIAQ : “The mating management, and even more the application of genetic improvement strategies linked with the market trends, is a guarantee that producers will remain on the global forefront and consequently remain competitive”.
