Canyon-Breeze ALLEN dies...
We regretfully announces that 39HO0750 Canyon-Breeze Allen VG EXTRA died on Saturday, December 4, 2004. Known as the “Dairy Strength Specialist,” Allen enjoyed international success as a type specialist. His daughters easily displayed Allen’s stamp of strong front ends, width of chest and capacity throughout. Allen himself held the number one type ranking in Canada at +20 and sired five of the six cows tied for the number one type position at +21 in the November 2004 proof run.

A special measure has recently been taken concerning Allen's semen doses. The price has been increased last 7 December since his semen inventory is very low. Since 1 January 2005 and while supplies last, CIAQ applies a discount on the price of Allen's semen when the insemination is done by an A.I. technician authorized by CIAQ. The price effective since 7 December remains the same for private sales as well as the limit of doses per purchase.

Furthermore, the discount to Young Sire Cooperators herds on the price of proven sire semen will be applied to the new network or private sales price.

For additional information, please contact our representative or A.I. technician in your area.

A sire of sons, the Semex Alliance sampled 50 Allen sons, with the first scheduled to receive official proofs in 2006. Semex offers a lineup filled with bulls specializing in dairy strength and type, while maintaining udder quality and dairyness including: 200HO4648 Regancrest-LH Modest-ET VG *TV (Durham x Aerostar); 200HO0113 Cedarwal Spirte EX *TV (Lee x Mason) and 200HO0142 Wilcoxview Jasper-ET VG *TV (Lee x Bellwood).

Canadian proofs - November 2004
We've got your number!
By Alan Bryson, agrologist
Head of genetics expertise, CIAQ
We've got your number... #1 LPI, #2 LPI, #3 LPI, #1 Fat, #4 Milk, #1 Type, #2 Type, #7 Protein and 71 of top 100 LPI are Semex Alliance owned!.
Highlights - Protein breeds
AYRSHIRE - Pardner is back in 2nd position, followed by Jerry. Reebuck, a bull sire, who is now ranked 6th. Conn with his daughters beginning their 2nd lactation, Perceval and Dilligent, the most popular sire in September, still rank among the top ten.

JERSEY - Perimiter continues to dominate the LPI list while Sultan and Fusion hold the 4th and 5th positions.

BROWN SWISS - Eskimo adds several daughters to his proof and makes important gains production-wise, increasing his LPI by 240 points.

CANADIENNE - there were few changes.

The sires in the coloured breeds proof sheet remain the same as in August.

The MACE proofs will be published on 8 November.

Once is nice, but five times is better!

For the 5th straight proof round, Hartline Titanic remains Canada's leading sire at +2475 LPI. His impressive indexes for feet & legs and mammary system again position him as a leader for this combination. Production and udder health, as well as exceptional development from the first to second lactation are the key points to the great quality of this sire.

Durham's best sons in Canada are at CIAQ. Newly proven and 2nd on the LPI list, Regancrest-LH Modest, (Durham x Aerostar) is a son of the full sister to Meadow Bridge Megabuck. The combination of his pedigree and interesting numbers, +15 type, +14 mammary system and more than 2000 kg of milk, is part of his superior appeal. His daughters display dairy strength and excellent mammary systems, adequate heels but, according to the Westgen area representatives, should be watched for pin setting. Ranking 3rd, Mainstream Magical (Durham x Nick), added some daughters and maintained his LPI since the August proofs. His strengths for feet & legs as well as udder texture, strong ligaments and superior production are among his attractive qualities. Magical is also our top sire for maternal calving ease and calving ease. The sire everyone was expecting, Mr Chestnut-Hyll Jackman (Durham x Rudolph), makes his debuts in 6th LPI position with a very balanced proof. This sire's daughters are dairy, with exceptional bone quality and very well defined udder ligaments. Jackman traces back to the same family that brought Caernarvon Jogger at the beginning of the 90s.

Daughters of Regancrest-LH Modest, Romolavi Jackman Sourise,VG85
a daughter of Mr Chestnut-Hyll Jackman

Two sires make their debuts at the right time, Brigeen Givenchy (Storm x Mandel) and Deslacs Milkstar (Lee x Lindy) who improve the fat/protein ratios that are sought-after within the industry.

Givenchy is one of the two sires in the proof sheet, Amo being the other, who reach more than 2500 kg of milk and improve the level of somatic cells. Very dairy cows with solid mammary systems are his trademarks. Milkstar, the full brother to Deslacs Lee Richy who, in 2002, was the Intermediate Champion at the Holstein Québec Spring Show, shows very high type indexes and very interesting milk components. He is strong for auxiliary traits, including somatic cells, persistency and herd life.

+20 Type - 99 % Reliability!

Worth noting is the strength of CIAQ sires for type, feet & legs and mammary system. A new level is reached in the Holstein breed with +20 for type by Canyon-Breeze Allen who, with the addition of 600 scored daughters, has a 99 % reliability. Allen dominates for frame and capacity, high and strong mammary systems and he can be used in confidence with all Aerostar and Starbuck bloodlines.

St-Patrice Liberty, VG85
a daughter of Visserdale Dilligent
Feet & legs are key assets to CIAQ's proof sheet including 11 sires at +10 and better; Titanic, Jackman and Stormatic all being at +14. To improve mammary systems, you can rely on one of the 20 sires at more than +10 including Talent, Morty and Titanic at +18 and +17 respectively.

Genetic trends

In February 2005, a new LPI will include higher weights for fat and milk components to reflect market trends as well as for daughter fertility. The sires who could benefit the most from those changes and who meet the market demands are none other than Maco Scotty and Canyon-Breeze Allen. Thanks to their fat/protein profile, their high milk components and their higher than average daughter fertility index, they are well positioned for the future. Other potentially popular sires include Freelance, Manager, Milkstar and September for interesting F/P ratios and milk components as well Stormatic, Income, Rudolph and Jebadiah for daughter fertility.

Also, two of those sires, Stormatic and Manager, are a terrific pair offered at a special price, a timely promotion to answer your needs.

Proof Highlights - August 2004
Ayrshire - Jersey - Brown Swiss
Holstein

lIn the August 2004 proof round, CIAQ/Semex is proud to present Durham's highest ranking sons in Canada, 200HO0170 Mainstream Magical-ET and 200HO1406 Emerald-Acr-SA T-Derek, ranking #2 and #7 respectively on their first official proofs.

The new #2 LPI bull, 200HO0170 Mainstream Magical, is a Durham son from an EX-90-2E USA DOM United Nick followed by a VG-88-USA Starbuck. Magical's numbers certainly indicate he is worthy of this ranking with +2144M +51F +86P and +7 Conf with a +9 for MS. Tars Cheema, Semex Sire Analyst comments, "Magical daughters are medium stature cows that show balance and proportion of body parts. Chest width and fore rib are average while rear rib excels in depth and sweep." Unfortunately this bull was lost earlier this year.

From a deep pedigree 200HO1406 Emerald-Acr-SA T-Derek is a Durham from an EX-90-4YR-USA GMD DOM Mandel, then an EX-94-5YR-USA GMD DOM Leadman followed by a VG-88-3YR-USA GMD DOM Inspiration, then an EX-94-2E-USA GMD DOM Bell, and then another EX-91-2E-USA GMD DOM and a EX-94-4E-USA-GMD. Arriving at the #7 LPI position, Derek is certainly looking impressive at +12 Conf with +11 MS and +31 F +48P and +1004M. He sires a very consistent pattern. The udders are snugly attached and teat placement is ideal with strong centre support. The legs and feet are very correct with outstanding heel depth and foot angle. These medium sized cows have wide pins and track straight on their rear legs. With his high protein percentage, good udders, calving ease, low somatic cell score and correct legs and feet, Derek is a great outcross choice for producers looking for problem free dairy cows.

CIAQ/Semex's top ranking bull remains Canada's #1 bull at +2453 LPI, 200HO3121 Hartline Titanic. August proofs added only two daughters to Titanic's proof, increasing his milk to +1910, a 59 point jump. He remains the leader of the Top 20 LPI sires for type and mammary systems at +16 and +17.

The Power of Balanced Breeding is evident within the CIAQ/Semex lineup as Freelance, Windows and Manager round out the top ten listing. Freelance continues to be a fat improver at +104 while he kept his impressive +11 Conf. and +12 MS. Windows and Manager climbed into the top ten with increases in their milk while adding daughters and maintaining conformation.

As the world revisits Maughlin Storm and his sons in the upcoming October Holstein Journal, CIAQ/Semex's sons Stormatic and September Storm certainly will be shining examples of this bull's powerful impact. Both bulls show tremendous type at +16, ranking them in the 99% of all bulls, and are consistent players in the top LPI rankings.

A well-rounded lineup, CIAQ/Semex owns top milk bulls in Amo at +2791M, fat with Freelance at +104F, and the number 1 type sires at an impressive +19 in Allen, Terrason and Jasper. Digging deeper into the type standings CIAQ/Semex owns 11 of the top 12 type sires, none ranking below +16.

Other new additions to the CIAQ/Semex lineup include 200HO4567 Cotopierre J R Belero, a purely Canadian pedigree with six generations VG or EX dams. His sire stack includes such bulls as James, Rudolph, Leadership, Lindy, Starbuck and Tempo. Belero's daughters show his +13 Conf and +14 MS numbers as they are tall, deep, wide, open ribbed and have quality udders with exceptional attachments. 200HO4562 Benner Jebadiah came out with a proof excelling in conformation at +16 Conf and +15 MS with +1143M, with Outside, Rudolph and Blackstar serving as the three closest sires in his pedigree. If you can imagine an Outside daughter with more style, you would be imagining a typical Jebadiah daughter. He has to be considered an udder specialist, as he makes daughters with wide and high rear udders with a teat placement just underneath the quarter, fore attachments are well-blended to the body wall, with great udder texture.

With the release of the August Top 100 TPI International listing, CIAQ/Semex finds additional success. Titanic ranks #5 at +1767M TPI, +2.76 PTAT, +2.18 UDC and +2.89 FLC. Newcomer Mainstream Magical ranks #9 at +1752M TPI, +2022M and +1.83 Type.

Stouder Morty continues his impressive ranking on the USA domestic Top 100 TPI list, ranking at #5 with +2125M +2.93 PTAT +2.85 UDC and +2.88 FLC with a +1761 TPI. Known as the "Global Genetic Giant," Morty has ranked no lower than 6th since his release in February 2002. Balanced breeding at its best!

Ayrshire

The X family from Kildare has reconfirmed its place in the Ayrshire industry with the release of Reebuck hitting near the top of the LPI list. Reebuck is the first son of Kildare X Pasty, a Blackaddar MM Patrick daughter who was a long-time holder of the top LPI Ayrshire cow position. On the paternal side, Reebuck is one of only two sons by Covey-Farms Olympic Reward to be tested in Canada.

Reebuck's proof is showing the strengths of the X family, excelling in production, especially for fat and protein percentages with very low somatic cell scores. Reebuck daughters are average sized dairy cows that have hard tops and wide rumps with hard-working, functional udders.

On the 3rd and 4th place come Pardner and Jerry. Another addition to the proof sheet is 200AY0308 Visserdale Dilligent-ET S, the first of five Dropstad sons to receive a Canadian proof. Dilligent will prove to be a very interesting bull in the current Ayrshire population, as his inbreeding value is 0% and has little relation to the population.

Dilligent has a very solid pedigree, starting with his dam Visserdale Georgette VG-87 by Blackaddar MM Patrick, who was a former #1 LPI cow. Next dam is Sunniside Serena EX-2E who was long-time #1 LPI daughter of Blackaddar BB Kellogg.

Dilligent daughters are tall deep-bodied dairy machines that are wide from chest to thurls. The udders on the Dilligent daughters are made for high production, with excellent median suspensory ligaments and super udder texture.

Jersey

The Jersey breed leader, Rock Ella Perimiter, stayed at the top for this proof round. Two new bulls are added to the proof sheet. 200JE306 Hollylane R Simba's Pride is a son of Lester Sambo with a balanced profile. 200JE7024 Fleurieu Augustus, a Brass Major son proven in Australia, is added to the list thanks to a very high MACE proof.

Brown Swiss

In the Brown Swiss breed, Jemstone has grabbed the 2nd place for LPI leaving the 3rd place to Cartoon. The new addition for that breed is 200BS402 Harts Elm Park Eskimo. This Ensign son is taking the 4th LPI position with a type proof of+12.

Canadienne

There are no changes in the Canadienne breed.

Madawaska Aerostar
March 25, 1985 - August 1, 2004
Madawaska Aerostar EX Extra died of natural causes on Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 19 years and 129 days of age. Aerostar was by far the oldest living bull at Westgen, and perhaps one of the oldest living bulls in the world at the time of his death.

Bred by Allan Boese of Madawaska Holsteins from Arnprior, Ontario, Canada, Aerostar entered the BCAI Centre's (Westgen's precursor) young sire proving program on April 11, 1986. He received his first official proof in February 1990, and has held the #1 LPI position. Aerostar was one of the early high milk production sires that also increased protein test.

Madawaska Aerostar Aerostar, with his high proof, sold just over 1.23 million doses of semen in Canada and around the world. At the time of his death Aerostar had 40,559 registered female progeny in Canada alone. While siring high producing, long lasting cows, Aerostar will also be remembered for transmitting well-respected proofs to his sons in Canada and around the world, including seven Class Extra sons in Canada.

"Aerostar is by far the sire who has had the most influence on the Canadian genetic population in the last 15 years. He was able to sire sons that met the needs of breeders all around the world. Aerostar has his place in history with the all-time greats: ABC, Arlinda Chief, Elevation & Starbuck," comments Pierre Laliberté Senior Manager, Genetics, Semex Alliance.

Buried on the Westgen property, Madawaska Aerostar will be remembered for the huge contribution he made to Semex Alliance customers in Canada and around the world.

CIAQ rewards a lot of lucky people at the Holstein Québec Picnic

By themselves or as a group, the participants completed with flying colours the four puzzles featuring the sires Titanic, Freelance, Igniter and Tribute

Congratulations to François Dagenais from Oka. He is the only person who identified the four sires in the puzzles. And that won him a summer hat!

Some smiling winners! André Poissant and his spouse from Ferme Choisel in Saint-Valentin with their A.I. technician, Luc Adam.
Under a blazing sun, the organising committee of the Saint-Jean Holstein club and the picnic hosts, Farm L. Campbell et Fils from Sainte-Sabine, welcomed nearly 6200 people last 17 July.

Members of the CIAQ staff were present with a booth, where visitors were invited to complete puzzles of Titanic, Freelance, Igniter and Tribute, in order to participate in the drawing of several prizes. Among those who tried to identify the four sires, only one breeder, François Dagenais from Oka, got a perfect score.

Six other winners were rewarded with CIAQ promotional items :

  • André Poissant from Ferme Choisel, Saint-Valentin, a folding chair
  • Carole Touchette from Ferme Mibois, Sainte-Françoise, a knapsack
  • Paul Méthé from Sainte-Anne-de-Sabrevois, a fleece blanket
  • Olivier Meunier from Deauville, a CD case and a thermos cup
  • Marc-André Paquet from Ferme Sainte-Croix Senc, a clock
  • Christian Riendeau from Ferme D Riendeau & fils enr., a cooler.

Furthermore, CIAQ sponsored a drawing of semen doses valued at 1000 $ for the Saint-Jean Holstein Club. The winners of the five semen lots valued at 200 $ are :

  • Daniel Fankhauser from Mont Saint-Grégoire
  • Ferme Dubosson enr. from Saint-Théodore-d'Acton
  • Ferme Urbain Grégoire & fils inc. from Saint-Blaise-sur-Richelieu
  • Simon Turcotte from Sayabec
  • Ferme Verhaegen inc. from Clarenceville

The provincial picnic is an additional opportunity for the CIAQ staff to meet with breeders in an environment that is always enjoyable and to fraternise with CIAQ’s clients and owners. Next year, the picnic will be held at Ferme Lolisée in Chatham, in the Laurentians Holstein Club, on 16 July 2005.

  Proof Highlights - May 2004
Another successful round of proofs for the Semex Alliance/CIAQ sees last round's #1, Titanic taking a commanding lead over the #2 LPI sire Freelance, while 70 of the top 100 LPI bulls call Semex/CIAQ home.

Titanic now enjoys a 264 LPI point lead over Freelance; has gained 57 LPI points over his February evaluation; leads the top 15 LPI sires in conformation at +16, and maintained his production numbers.

The 2003 Canadian Cow of the Year's Aeroline son, Freelance, regains his #2 position through his strong component numbers +1950M +112F +67P, with a double digit conformation of +11, unchanged from February.

Amo rises three positions into the top ten at +1820 LPI. His numbers continue to impress breeders throughout the world, adding 100 points to his milk evaluation at +2846M +76P +82F, with pleasing conformation of +6.

Étoile D'Or Conn Jessica 2, VG86
a daughter of Shady Walnut Conn
Will-A-Way Sue-Ellen,
a daughter of Norval Acres Plaudit
Last round's new addition from the Comestar family, Manager, continues to sire daughters with impressive component numbers at +1281M +64F +46P. He increased two points on type to +12 Conf., while maintaining his LPI at +1780.

The Winchester son from the famous Digne family at La Présentation, Windows, decreased slightly in LPI ranking to #15 at +1740 LPI +1933M +57F +48P and +12 Conf., and ranks #2 in the top 15 LPI for mammary systems at +13.

Certainly a success story for the Semex Alliance/CIAQ, is the newly crowned conformation leader at +18 (tie), Canyon-Breeze Allen. Jumping in the rankings from 61st in February to 16th this round, Allen's success is attributed to the addition of over 300 daughters to his production proof, with a solid type proof of over 240 daughters.

The Ayrshire program saw a new release bull, Shady Walnut Conn (Corey x Cornelius), take the #1 LPI position. With +2531 LPI he has a substantial lead of 110 LPI points over the former #1, Pardner at +2421. Conn sires daughters that are extremely stylish with wonderful mammar
